Symmetrical sprays of pale blue-green and olive flowers and leaves, with copper-pink accents, are woven against a deep green silk ground, the threads giving the surface a faint sheen. William Morris designed Flower Garden in 1879. He said he chose its colours to suggest inlaid metalwork, and curators link that idea to the Damascus pieces he examined at the London dealer Vincent Robinson's shop in 1878, the same visit that fed into Peacock and Dragon. The V&A holds a Jacquard-woven silk of the design in light blue, yellow and mauve on dark green; this colourway is quieter, in sage, olive and copper. This silk length, over two metres long, was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1923.

This print fills the sheet edge to edge with the pattern, cropped from a high-resolution museum scan of the original, so it reads like a panel of the wallpaper or fabric. The exhibition poster shows the whole sample. The design is in the public domain.

Where it works

Muted sage, olive and copper on deep green give a quiet, textured richness to a study, library or bedroom. Pair it with Violet and Columbine (Green) at 16×24 in natural wood.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.

Framing. Printed edge to edge: a slim black or natural wood frame right to the pattern, or let the canvas wrap do the framing. Also available gallery-wrapped on canvas, ready to hang with no frame.

Pairing. Hangs alone or as a matched pair; three or more prints are 10% off.

Is this the whole design, or a crop?
A crop: the print fills the sheet edge to edge with the repeating pattern, the way it runs across a wall, taken from a museum scan of the original. To see the whole sample, choose the exhibition poster.
Is Flower Garden in the public domain?
Yes. William Morris (1834–1896) died more than 70 years ago and the design dates from before 1931, so it is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of an original held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18 and 16×24 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. It is also available gallery-wrapped on canvas. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Flower Garden designed?
William Morris designed Flower Garden in 1879; this sample is woven silk.
What size should I choose?
For Flower Garden we'd choose 16×24. Patterns also hang well as a pair or a row of three colourways at the same size.
