Seen through a carved stone archway, Saint Jerome sits reading in a raised wooden study built inside a vast Gothic hall, his red cardinal's hat on a bench, his shelves holding books and pots; windows on either side open onto green countryside, his lion pads through the shadows at the right, a cat sleeps nearby, and on the ledge in front stand a partridge, a peacock and a brass bowl. Antonello da Messina painted the small panel in oil on limewood in about 1475, and its minute detail and light reflect his close knowledge of Netherlandish painting. When Marcantonio Michiel saw it in Venice in 1529, in the house of Antonio Pasqualino, connoisseurs could not agree whether it was by Antonello, Jan van Eyck or Hans Memling; Crowe and Cavalcaselle confirmed Antonello's authorship in 1856. Its carefully constructed perspective has led some to suggest it was made to demonstrate his skill to Venetian patrons. It later belonged to Thomas Baring, Earl of Northbrook, and has been in the National Gallery, London, since 1894.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Saint Jerome in His Study in the public domain?
Yes. Antonello da Messina (c. 1430–1479) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Gallery.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×16, 18×24 and 24×32 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Saint Jerome in His Study painted, and in what medium?
Saint Jerome in His Study dates from c. 1475 and was made in oil on lime panel; the original measures 45.7 × 36.2 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×32 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 18×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Saint Jerome in His Study we'd choose 18×24.
