Seen through a carved stone archway, Saint Jerome sits reading in a raised wooden study built inside a vast Gothic hall, his red cardinal's hat on a bench, his shelves holding books and pots; windows on either side open onto green countryside, his lion pads through the shadows at the right, a cat sleeps nearby, and on the ledge in front stand a partridge, a peacock and a brass bowl. Antonello da Messina painted the small panel in oil on limewood in about 1475, and its minute detail and light reflect his close knowledge of Netherlandish painting. When Marcantonio Michiel saw it in Venice in 1529, in the house of Antonio Pasqualino, connoisseurs could not agree whether it was by Antonello, Jan van Eyck or Hans Memling; Crowe and Cavalcaselle confirmed Antonello's authorship in 1856. Its carefully constructed perspective has led some to suggest it was made to demonstrate his skill to Venetian patrons. It later belonged to Thomas Baring, Earl of Northbrook, and has been in the National Gallery, London, since 1894.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
