A young Florentine woman with a pale, unsmiling face and tight copper curls is set against a dark juniper bush, with a misty river landscape opening on the right. Leonardo painted Ginevra de' Benci in Florence between about 1474 and 1478, probably to mark her betrothal or her marriage at sixteen to Luigi Niccolini; the juniper, ginepro in Italian, plays on her name and was a symbol of female virtue. The reverse carries a juniper sprig in a wreath of laurel and palm with the motto Virtutem forma decorat, beauty adorns virtue, and infrared examination has found the motto of the Venetian ambassador Bernardo Bembo beneath it, suggesting he had a part in the commission. The bottom of the panel was cut down at some point, probably taking her hands with it. The National Gallery of Art bought the portrait from the Prince of Liechtenstein in 1967; it is the only painting by Leonardo on public view in the Americas.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
