A young man in a black slashed doublet stands in a grey stone interior, his right hand on his hip and his left resting on a book whose pages he keeps open with a finger, the corner of a table and chair carved with grotesque masks beside him. His pale, composed face and cool, appraising look are typical of the formal style Bronzino brought to Florentine portraiture. The Metropolitan Museum dates the picture to the 1530s, when Bronzino was establishing himself as the leading portraitist in Florence before he became court painter to Duke Cosimo I de' Medici. The sitter has not been identified; Bronzino, himself a poet, moved in Florentine literary circles, and the book suggests a man of letters. Infrared reflectography has shown that Bronzino altered parts of the composition as he worked. The painting came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1929 with the bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
