In a round panel the Virgin, crowned by two angels, writes the opening of the Magnificat, her hymn of praise from the Gospel of Luke, in a book held by kneeling angels, while the Christ Child on her lap guides her hand; in her other hand she holds a pomegranate, a symbol of the Passion and Resurrection. Behind the group a serene river landscape opens through a circular frame, and gold rays descend from the top. Botticelli painted the tondo, about 118 centimetres across, in Florence in about 1483, and made lavish use of gold in the hair, haloes and drapery borders. The opposite page of the book shows part of the Benedictus, the canticle of Zechariah. Nothing is known of its early history; the Uffizi acquired it from a private collection in 1784, and it may have come from one of the monasteries suppressed by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. Copies exist in the Louvre and in the Morgan Library in New York. It hangs in the Uffizi.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
