The canvas is in two zones. Below, Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine, in gold-embroidered vestments, lower the body of the Count of Orgaz, clad in shining armour, into his tomb, watched by a row of black-clad Toledan gentlemen with white ruffs and by clergy; a boy at the lower left points to the scene. Above, the Count's soul is carried upwards by an angel towards Christ, the Virgin, John the Baptist and a crowd of saints. Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, lord of Orgaz, died in 1323 and left money to the church of Santo Tomé; legend held that the two saints came down from heaven to bury him. The parish priest Andrés Núñez, who had won a lawsuit to enforce the bequest, commissioned the painting for the Count's burial chapel, and the contract with El Greco was signed on 18 March 1586. It was finished by 1588, when people were already coming to see the portraits of local notables in it. It remains where it was made to hang, in the church of Santo Tomé in Toledo.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
