At the edge of a post town, travellers in straw hats walk past a row of brown-roofed houses while a man bows in the middle of the road. At the right, under a large tree and a reed awning, a palanquin rests on a stand and a groom bends to tie his sandals beside a loaded horse; a stone marker stands on the green bank behind them, under a sky graded from deep blue to cream. This is print two of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Kinjudō (Iseya Rihei), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Itabashi was the first station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
