- Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Farmhouses with thatched roofs nestle among yellow-green hills and terraced fields, and country people go about their work along the paths, one with a hawk on his arm near the top of the slope. Between the hills, far away, a small white Fuji appears above a band of blue. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). Lower Meguro was a farming area on the south-western edge of Edo. The rounded hills and fields create a gentle, patterned landscape; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Sunny yellow-green hills with soft blue and a tiny Fuji, for a kitchen, family room or study at 24×16 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's "Grandpa's Teahouse" in Meguro for two views of the Meguro hills.
