On a narrow ledge beneath a cliff hung with trees and a thin waterfall, a man rides an ox along a yellow path. Below him two bearers bow beside an empty palanquin and a traveller in a yellow hat passes with a box on his back. Beyond the pass a grey peak rises from the mist, with a blue mountain further off and birds crossing a pale yellow sky. This is print forty-four of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Magome was the forty-third station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto, and the view is from the pass; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
