Visitors crowd the wooden balcony of a temple hall, leaning on the rail and pointing out toward a small white Fuji on the horizon, while a man rests with his bundle at the right. Below the balcony a wide plain stretches to the distant mountain, and the floorboards run in strong lines toward it. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). The Sazai Hall at the Rakanji temple of the Five Hundred Arhats, east of the Sumida, was a multi-storey hall whose upper gallery was a famous lookout. Hokusai uses the converging lines of the floor and rail to lead the eye to the mountain; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Warm wooden yellows and soft blue sky with a small Fuji, for a hallway, home office or living room at 36×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's The Sazaidō Hall at the Five Hundred Rakan Temple, the same lookout a generation later.
