The white cone of Mount Fuji stands far off across flat, grey-green fields, framed by two slender trees with pale pink foliage. In the foreground an old man and a child with a basket on her back hurry past a small roofed marker stone at the left, stooks of straw stand by the road, and at the right a traveller in a round hat walks behind two bearers carrying a palanquin. This is print five of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Ōmiya was the fourth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
