On a mountain pass, two women carrying tall bundles of firewood walk under a leaning red-brown pine, past a dark stone carved with an inscription and a small spring at the lower left. At the right two old travellers rest on the rocks among their bags and hats, one smoking a long pipe, with a deep blue mountain rising from the mist behind them. This is print thirty-six of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Yabuhara was the thirty-fifth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto, and the title names the Suzuri spring at Torii Pass; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
