A ripe wheat field in the summer wind, a towering cypress at the right, olive trees in the middle distance, the blue line of the Alpilles behind and white clouds rolling across the sky. Van Gogh painted it on the spot in late June or early July 1889 from the countryside around the asylum at Saint-Rémy, in the same weeks as The Starry Night, and he counted it among his best summer landscapes; he told Theo the sky was like a piece of Scotch plaid. Its thick impasto records the heat and the gusts almost physically. That September, working indoors, he made two studio versions, one the same size, now in the National Gallery in London, and a smaller one for his mother and sister. This first version was bought by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1993 with a gift from the Annenberg Foundation.
