Three figures in town clothes look out from the chalk cliffs of Rügen, framed by two trees: a woman in red sits at the left, a man in blue crouches to peer over the edge, and a man leaning against a tree at the right gazes out to sea, where two tiny sailboats drift. Friedrich married Caroline Bommer in January 1818 and that summer the couple travelled to the Baltic island with his brother; the painting, made around 1818, has long been read as a celebration of the marriage, with the woman as Caroline and the crouching figure as the artist himself. The viewpoint is the Stubbenkammer, then the island's most famous lookout, though the cliffs are composed rather than copied. The picture belongs to the Oskar Reinhart collection at the Kunst Museum Winterthur in Switzerland.
