A gnarled pine leans out from the edge of a bluff, its branches spread like a canopy, while below it travellers rest at a teahouse, a man leads a horse and porters carry a palanquin down the slope. Beyond lie pale rice fields and the blue waters of the bay, scattered with sails. The print is number twenty-six in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fifth month of 1856. The pine at Hakkeizaka, on the road south of Edo, took its name from a legend that the warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie hung his armour on it. A band of red bokashi lights the horizon behind the ships; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
