The customs house of Venice at the Punta della Dogana stands at the right, and the church of San Giorgio Maggiore floats across the water in the pale light of the lagoon, with gondolas and working boats crowding the foreground. Turner painted it in 1834 for Henry McConnel, a Manchester cotton spinner and collector, and showed it at the Royal Academy that year. McConnel then commissioned a deliberate contrast, the industrial night scene Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight, and the pair hung together in his collection until he sold them in 1849. Venice, which Turner had visited in 1819 and again in 1833, became one of the great subjects of his last two decades. Both paintings came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington through the Widener Collection in 1942, where they again hang side by side.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
