Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō

As evening falls on the main street, two women from an inn grab passing travellers by their bags and collars to pull them inside, one man struggling under his load. At the right, a woman leans out of a window, guests rest inside and a man washes his feet in a tub, while the street runs back between dark roofs to a blue distance. The print is number thirty-six in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Goyu, the thirty-fifth station, was known for the pushy touting of its inn women, and the large round sign inside the inn bears the name Takenouchi, a nod to the print's publisher; impressions vary in colour and condition.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Dusky greys and teal with figures in indigo and red, for a living room, study or hallway at 24×16 in black. It pairs with Akasaka: Inn with Serving Maids, the next station's look inside an inn.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Goyu: Women Stopping Travelers in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 18×12 and 24×16 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Goyu: Women Stopping Travelers painted, and in what medium?
Goyu: Women Stopping Travelers dates from 1833–34 and was made in woodblock print; ink and colour on paper; the original measures 24.1 × 35.6 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×16 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 18×12 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Goyu: Women Stopping Travelers we'd choose 24×16. It is a landscape print, wider than it is tall, at the painting's own proportions.
