The red buildings of the Hachiman shrine rise on a wooded hill among cherry trees in bloom, reached by a flight of stone steps, while bands of pink mist drift across the rows of shops at its foot. A strip of the castle moat runs along the bottom of the sheet, and a flock of birds crosses the sky. The print is number forty-one in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the tenth month of 1858, making it one of the last prints of the series to be issued, in the year of Hiroshige's death. The shrine at Ichigaya overlooked the outer moat of Edo Castle. The layered mist separates the shrine from the town in a way typical of the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
