A battledore paddle and a feathered shuttlecock cut into the right edge of the picture, the legs of a kite dangle from the top, and a pine branch sprawls across the foreground: all New Year games, set against the wide castle moat where ducks swim beneath stone walls. Across the water stand the white walls and red gates of daimyo residences, with a small white Fuji on the horizon at left. The print is number three in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi; its censor's seal is dated the twelfth month of 1857, so it was issued well after many later numbers in the series. Hiroshige often builds these views on a large close-up object at the edge of the sheet with a distant scene behind it. The sky is printed with a graded bokashi from rose to pale yellow; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Teal moat water, pine green and a pale peach sky with a playful kite and paddle, for a hallway, home office or family room at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Kasumigaseki as a pair of New Year views.
