The corner house on the place Lamartine in Arles where Van Gogh rented four rooms from May 1888, painted in September that year under what he called a sulphur sun and a pure cobalt sky. The green shutters mark his rooms; the pink building at the left is the restaurant where he took his meals, and the avenue at the right runs down to two railway bridges, a train crossing the first. He wanted the Yellow House to become a studio of the south where painter friends could live and work together, and Gauguin arrived to share it in late October. Van Gogh himself called the picture The Street. The house was badly damaged by Allied bombing in 1944 and later demolished, so the painting is its main surviving record. It is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the collection kept by the artist's family.
