Travellers in wide straw hats carry a palanquin over the Shinmachi Bridge, a wooden span with red rails, into a village of thatched teahouses roofed in orange and grey. Tall trees rise behind the houses, a rounded wooded hill fills the middle distance, and at the left the land opens out to fields and low blue hills under a band of orange sky. The print is number five in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Hodogaya was the fourth station, and the Shinmachi Bridge carried the road over the Katabira River at the entrance to the town; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Warm orange roofs, red bridge rails and soft river blue, for a hallway, kitchen or living room at 24×16 in natural wood. It pairs with Hokusai's Hodogaya on the Tōkaidō for two views of the same station a few years apart.
