Two tall, dark poplars rise at the left of a hillside village, with a church spire beyond them and fields laid out in broad slabs of green, crimson, ochre and blue; a pale path runs diagonally through the foreground, and houses are reduced to a few strokes. The trees and buildings are still there, but colour has taken over from description. Kandinsky painted it in 1912, at the height of his Blue Rider years, when he was moving between such landscapes and his first fully abstract canvases, and it turns the Bavarian countryside he knew into blocks of colour. The Chicago collector Arthur Jerome Eddy bought it from the artist in 1913, the year Kandinsky's work was shown in the Armory Show in New York and Chicago, and it came to the Art Institute of Chicago with the Eddy memorial gift in 1931.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
