A deep blue river winds toward us across a wide, flat landscape, past villages of yellow thatched roofs and stands of trees, with a sandbar in the foreground and a single boat on the water. Mount Fuji rises white on the horizon under a pink sky. The print is number ninety-six in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the second month of 1856. Horie and Nekozane were fishing villages on the coast east of Edo, near the mouth of the river. Hiroshige uses a bird's-eye viewpoint so that the river becomes a strong curving shape across the sheet; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
