Cherry trees in full pink and white bloom cover the hill at Gotenyama, where crowds of visitors picnic, drink and wander among the blossoms, and teahouses stand among the trees. Beyond the hill, across the bay, a small white Fuji rises on the horizon. The print is one of the ten additional views Hokusai added to his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō), and like the others it is printed with black outlines. Gotenyama, at Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō road, was one of the most popular places for cherry viewing in Edo. The rounded yellow hills and soft pink blossoms give the print a festive spring mood; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Cherry-blossom pink and soft yellow-green with a small white Fuji, for a living room, bedroom or entrance hall at 24×16 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's Palace Hill in Shinagawa, the same hill a generation later.
