On a long wooden bridge, an elderly man and his companion stop while two travellers bow low and a small boy gazes up at a kite that has broken loose and sails away on the wind. Below, farmers plant rice in the flooded fields, and beyond the water rises the dark blue bulk of Mount Akiba. The print is number twenty-seven in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Kakegawa, the twenty-sixth station, was a castle town, and from here a road led north to the shrine on Mount Akiba, visited by pilgrims who prayed for protection from fire; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Pale water, a cream bridge and a dark blue mountain, with kites against the sky, for a living room, family room or study at 24×16 in natural wood. It pairs with Kasumigaseki, another Hiroshige view with kites on long strings.
