A procession crosses the Ōi River in a long, thin line, porters carrying palanquins and baggage over sandbars and through shallow blue channels toward the near bank. Beyond the river rise green, rocky hills and the dark cone of a mountain under a pale yellow sky. The print is number twenty-five in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Kanaya, the twenty-fourth station, lay on the Tōtōmi side of the river opposite Shimada, so travellers coming from Edo reached it only after being carried across. Hiroshige shows the crossing from both banks, in this print and the one before it; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
