The main street of a post town runs back between teahouses and inns with paper lanterns and lettered signs at their doors. In the foreground grooms lead two packhorses with red saddle cloths, a man in a green cape and wide hat walks toward us, and travellers stand talking by a stone wall, with tall pines and a green mountain behind. This is print sixty-three of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Banba was the sixty-second station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Soft greens and grey road with warm brown horses and white lanterns, for a hallway, entrance or dining room at 24×16 in natural wood. It pairs with Sekigahara: Teahouse by the Road for two post-town stops near the end of the journey.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Banba: Teahouses on the Road in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Diet Library.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 18×12 and 24×16 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Banba: Teahouses on the Road painted, and in what medium?
Banba: Teahouses on the Road dates from c. 1835–38 and was made in woodblock print; ink and colour on paper; the original measures approx. 23 × 35 cm (horizontal ōban).
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×16 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 18×12 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Banba: Teahouses on the Road we'd choose 24×16. It is a landscape print, wider than it is tall, at the painting's own proportions.
