A gust of wind bends a tall stand of bamboo and blows birds across the pale sky. On the green bank below, three travellers stop to talk, one in orange pointing with a staff over his shoulder, one with a basket on his back and one holding a round hat. A tree with red foliage stands at the right, and a pale river and marshes run off to the left. This is print fifty-six of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Mieji was the fifty-fifth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
