Three travellers in wide yellow hats, one of them a child, walk through tall autumn grasses beside a winding blue stream, and at the right a pilgrim with a box on his back carries a long pole hung with a lettered blue banner. A slender tree with red leaves rises in the middle, and a dark, flat-topped mountain stands across the plain under a red-edged sky. This is print twenty-two of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Kinjudō (Iseya Rihei), c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Otai was the twenty-first station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
