At the edge of a thatched farmhouse hung with leaves drying under the eaves, a man leans out from the doorway and a woman sits on a straw mat sorting bundles of rice straw. A traveller with a hat slung on his back stops on the green to point across the open plain, where a rider on horseback crosses the far bank and a flight of sparrows wheels against a cream and blue sky. This is print seven of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Okegawa was the sixth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
