Beside a thatched teahouse hung with reed blinds, a porter with a bundle of straw and a basket bows to two travellers in wide yellow hats, while a man runs out behind him waving a fan. Across the deep blue river, a village of grey roofs and a long bridge sit below a dark blue mountain, under an orange evening sky. This is print fourteen of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Takasaki was the thirteenth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
