Travellers cross the long wooden Sanjō bridge on its timber piers: porters with baggage, figures in hats and long robes, one under an umbrella. Beyond the river lie the roofs of Kyoto and wooded hills, with a pink-brown mountain rising behind under a sky glowing orange at the top. The print is number fifty-five, the last in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. The Great Bridge at Sanjō over the Kamo River marked the end of the Tōkaidō in Kyoto, the imperial capital, after a journey of nearly 500 kilometres from Nihonbashi in Edo; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A warm brown bridge and pale blue river under a pink mountain and orange sky, for an entrance hall, living room or study at 24×16 in black. It pairs with Nihonbashi: Morning View, the first print of the series, for both ends of the journey.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
