On a riverbank at night, a woman in a striped purple kimono walks beneath the branches of a tree, the edge of a paper lantern just visible at the left. Across the dark blue river the windows of buildings glow faintly, and the sky is full of small stars. The print is number thirty-four in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. Matsuchiyama was a small hill with a shrine beside the Sumida River, near the mouth of the San'ya canal. Hiroshige prints the night sky in deep blue with reserved stars, one of the few true night scenes in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Deep night blue with a figure in purple and red, for a bedroom, dressing room or reading corner at 16×24 in black. It pairs with Tsukudajima and Eitai Bridge for two night prints.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Night View of Matsuchiyama and the San'ya Canal in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Diet Library.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18 and 16×24 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Night View of Matsuchiyama and the San'ya Canal painted, and in what medium?
Night View of Matsuchiyama and the San'ya Canal dates from 1857 and was made in woodblock print; ink and color on paper; the original measures approx. 36 × 24 cm (ōban).
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 16×24 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 12×18 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Night View of Matsuchiyama and the San'ya Canal we'd choose 16×24.
