On a riverbank at night, a woman in a striped purple kimono walks beneath the branches of a tree, the edge of a paper lantern just visible at the left. Across the dark blue river the windows of buildings glow faintly, and the sky is full of small stars. The print is number thirty-four in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. Matsuchiyama was a small hill with a shrine beside the Sumida River, near the mouth of the San'ya canal. Hiroshige prints the night sky in deep blue with reserved stars, one of the few true night scenes in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
