The hindquarters and legs of a packhorse, shod in straw sandals, fill the right side of the sheet, with droppings on the road beside them, and past the horse a street of inns and shops runs into the distance. Small figures walk along the road under a pale sky. The print is number eighty-six in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eleventh month of 1857. Naitō Shinjuku was the first post station on the Kōshū highway leading west from Edo, a busy place of horses and travellers. Hiroshige's choice of foreground is wry and down to earth, one of the most surprising in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Russet horse against soft green and a pale street, for a den, hallway or home office at 24×36 in natural wood. It pairs with Ushimachi in Takanawa for two roadside scenes with animals.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Naitō Shinjuku in Yotsuya in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Library of Congress.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Naitō Shinjuku in Yotsuya painted, and in what medium?
Naitō Shinjuku in Yotsuya dates from 1857 and was made in woodblock print; ink and color on paper; the original measures 36.3 × 24.1 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Naitō Shinjuku in Yotsuya we'd choose 24×36.
