Under a pale crescent moon and a long line of geese, the raised Nihon embankment runs diagonally across the sheet at dusk, lined with teahouse stalls and busy with palanquins and walkers. Low trees and rooftops stretch away into the misty distance beyond. The print is number one hundred in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fourth month of 1857. The embankment was the road from the Sumida River to the Yoshiwara, Edo's licensed pleasure quarter, and was busy with traffic through the evening. Hiroshige keeps the palette to soft greys, blues and straw yellows, which suits the fading light; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
