The trunk of a huge cedar divides the picture in two, with the red pillars of the shrine at right and, between them, a priest in green robes and two attendants in white and yellow looking out over rooftops toward the dawn. The sky glows rose along the horizon and the ground below is washed in yellow-green, as if the first light were just reaching it. The print is number ten in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the ninth month of 1857. Kanda Myōjin stood on high ground in the city and was one of Edo's principal shrines. The bold vertical trunk and the graded bokashi of sky and ground give this one of the most restful designs in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
