Pleasure boats moored on the Seine at Argenteuil, with the road bridge spanning the river beyond, painted in 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition. Argenteuil was Monet's home from 1871 to 1878 and the sailing basin was a favourite subject. Seen from a few metres away the brushstrokes settle into a convincing summer scene; up close they separate into distinct dabs of unblended blue, red, green and yellow, with quick, skipping marks for the lapping water and denser, stubbier strokes in the trees. The figure in the sailboat is barely more than a ghost. The painting was sold by Durand-Ruel in 1890 to the jeweller Henri Vever and passed through the de Curel family before Paul Mellon bought it in 1961; he gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1983.
