A traveller swings down from his horse in front of a teahouse called Komeya, whose sign hangs from the eaves beside a row of paper plaques, while a woman at the door waits to greet him and other travellers stand by. Behind them a stone lantern and a marker post stand at a fork in the road, a man crosses a red-railed bridge at the right, and the land falls away to fields under an orange sky. The print is number six in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. At Totsuka, the fifth station, a side road branched off from the highway toward Kamakura, and the marker post shows the way; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
