A gust of wind sweeps across the riverbank: a willow bends hard, the reeds flatten, and a man in blue runs after his straw hat as it rolls away down the embankment. At the right, a traveller wrapped in a yellow cape braces himself on a narrow plank bridge, while the masts of boats and pink roofs show at the left beneath a red band of sky. The print is number forty-four in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Yokkaichi, the forty-third station, stood near Ise Bay and took its name, fourth-day market, from a market held on the days of the month ending in four; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Pale blues and greys with a bright yellow cape and a wind-bent willow, for a study, hallway or home office at 36×24 in black. It pairs with Hokusai's Ejiri in Suruga Province for two scenes of travellers caught by the wind.
