Three peasant women bend to pick up stray ears of wheat left after the harvest, their backs curved in the same rhythm, while far behind them the harvest proper goes on with loaded carts, haystacks and a mounted overseer under a golden evening light. Millet painted it at Barbizon in 1857 after a decade of studies of the subject. Gleaning was a right of the rural poor, and showing them at this scale, monumental and anonymous, struck critics at the Salon of 1857 as a political statement; one called the women the Three Fates of pauperism. Millet insisted he was simply painting what he saw. The canvas was bequeathed to the Louvre in 1890 and is now in the Musée d'Orsay, where it hangs near his Angelus.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Golden evening light over a harvest field gives this a warm, settled feel for a kitchen, dining room or farmhouse-style living room at 24×18. A black or natural wood frame on a cream or ochre wall; it pairs with The Angelus in spirit.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
