Fashionably dressed holidaymakers sit and stroll on the sands at Trouville under a wide Normandy sky, painted on a small panel with the quick, flickering touch Boudin made his own. Trouville and neighbouring Deauville had become the smartest resorts in France in the 1860s, and Boudin, a native of Honfleur across the Seine estuary, found his subject in the visitors who came by train from Paris. He painted dozens of these beach scenes, working outdoors to catch the exact weather; this one dates from 1864 to 1865. The young Monet, whom Boudin had persuaded to paint in the open air a few years earlier, learned the habit from pictures like this. The panel later belonged to Lord Rothermere and came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1970 with the bequest of Ailsa Mellon Bruce.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
