Short black horizontal and vertical dashes, some crossing to form plus signs, are scattered across a pale ground and gathered into a loose oval, denser in some places and sparser in others, with no colour at all. A few longer verticals near the bottom centre suggest a pier running out into the sea, while the rest reads as the rhythm of waves under a night sky. Mondrian painted it in 1915 in the Netherlands, where the First World War had kept him, from drawings made at the seaside resorts of Domburg and Scheveningen. It was his first painting in black and white only and is regarded as a turning point on his way to pure abstraction. Theo van Doesburg saw it exhibited that year and sought Mondrian out, the start of the partnership that led to De Stijl. It is in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
