The Virgin walks forward on a bank of cloud carrying the Christ child, framed by parted green curtains, with Pope Sixtus II kneeling at the left and Saint Barbara at the right; two winged cherubs lean on a ledge at the bottom, gazing upward. Raphael painted it in Rome around 1512 to 1514 on commission from Pope Julius II for the church of San Sisto in Piacenza, and it is one of his last Madonnas, painted on canvas rather than panel. Augustus III of Saxony bought it from the monks in 1754 and brought it to Dresden, where it became the most admired painting in Germany. The two bored cherubs at the base were detached from the composition in the nineteenth century and became a popular image in their own right.
