A Sunday afternoon dance in the garden of the Moulin de la Galette, an open-air dance hall on the hill of Montmartre, with couples waltzing under the acacias, a group of young men and women chatting at a table in the foreground and sunlight falling through the leaves in patches on the dancers' clothes. Renoir painted it in 1876, close to the spot; he rented a studio nearby and his friends posed for the figures. The dappled light, which some critics at the 1877 Impressionist exhibition took for stains, is the whole subject. The canvas was bought by Caillebotte, bequeathed to the French state in 1894 and is in the Musée d'Orsay. A smaller version painted at the same time is in a private collection.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Dappled light and dancing couples make this a living or dining room picture, over a sofa or sideboard at 24×18. Natural wood on soft white or pale blue keeps the sunlight; pair it with Luncheon of the Boating Party for two Renoir afternoons.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
