A young woman in a deep blue dress and red hat sits on the terrace of the Restaurant Fournaise at Chatou, a small girl in a flowered bonnet beside her and a basket of coloured wool on the rail. Renoir painted it in the spring of 1881 at the riverside spot he loved for its good company away from Paris, shortly after finishing Luncheon of the Boating Party there; it is among the last of his pictures set at Fournaise. The elder sister was posed by Jeanne Darlot, an eighteen-year-old who later became an actress, and the models were not actually related. Renoir called it Two Sisters; his dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who bought it in July 1881 for 1,500 francs, preferred On the Terrace. It was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882 and has hung in the Art Institute of Chicago since 1933.
