Marguerite Charpentier, wife of the publisher Georges Charpentier, sits in the Japanese-style salon of her Paris townhouse beside her son Paul, who at three still has uncut hair and is dressed identically to his sister Georgette, perched on the family dog. The Charpentiers were Renoir's most important patrons in the late 1870s, and Marguerite's Friday salon drew Flaubert, Zola and the Goncourts. Renoir received the commission in 1878 and painted the family in their own rooms, recording the decor and the chic gowns with evident pleasure; Proust later praised the picture for its poetry of an elegant home and the beautiful dresses of its time. Through her connections Madame Charpentier secured it a prominent place at the Salon of 1879, a turning point in Renoir's reputation. The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought it in 1907 with the Wolfe Fund.
