On the night of 16 October 1834 fire destroyed most of the old Palace of Westminster, and Turner was among the crowds on the Thames watching it burn. He filled two sketchbooks with pencil and watercolour notes, then painted two oils of the event in late 1834 and early 1835. This is the Cleveland version, shown at the Royal Academy in 1835: the view is from further downstream, towards Waterloo Bridge, with the flames and smoke blown out over the river and spectators crowding the bank and the boats. In the lower right, firefighting boats are being towed towards a blaze already far beyond their reach. Turner reworked the canvas extensively on varnishing day. It came to the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1942 as the bequest of John L. Severance.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
