The ninety-eight-gun warship Temeraire, which had fought beside Victory at Trafalgar in 1805, is towed up the Thames by a small black steam tug to be broken up at Rotherhithe, her ghostly white hull set against a blazing sunset. Turner painted the scene in 1839 from accounts of the ship's last voyage the previous year, and took liberties: the masts had already been removed, and the sun sets in the east. He exhibited it at the Royal Academy with lines from Thomas Campbell and refused ever to sell it. The picture reads as an elegy for the age of sail and for Britain's naval past, with the tug's smoke and fire standing for the new industrial age. Turner left it to the nation in 1851, and it hangs in the National Gallery.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
